Phases of the Interior Design Process
One of the main questions I am asked by potential clients during our initial conversation is “how long will it take for you to design my room?” Timing, as they say, is everything! Once a client and I decide to work together the design process begins and a schedule is be established.
Here’s a brief breakdown of my design process and the general timing for each phase. I always find that knowing the timeframes upfront helps a project move along much smoother for everyone.
Design Proposal and Letter of Agreement
Once a client and I have determined the scope of his/her project, I prepare a design proposal for consideration. It will note all of the project tasks and the design fee to complete those tasks. After the proposal is accepted a Letter of Agreement is prepared for all parties to sign. Timing – this phase can take 1 to 2 weeks.
Now the design process begins and the client’s project is put on the schedule.
Most design projects begin with reviewing the function of your spaces, which means creating a space plan. This show a client how all items will fit in the space, the best arrangement of furniture or kitchen and bathroom items, and the dimensions of all items. This becomes the guide for developing the room. Timing – this phase can take 1 to 2 weeks.
Researching materials and furnishings
Once a plan is set for your room, the specific furnishings and materials are selected to complete the space plan. I research and select specific furnishings and present them along with a hand drawn illustration of your room. Timing – this phase can take 4 to 6 weeks.
Plans and furnishings are presented during an in person meeting which includes an electronic preview of each item, a binder with color images of each item as well as tangible samples of fabrics and materials. Timing – there may be a few mini presentations throughout the process, but the final presentation takes place 6 to 10 weeks after the Design Proposal is submitted for consideration.
What’s next in the design process? Purchasing the furniture selections.
