Eco-Friendly Design Inspirations

Forty six years ago the Earth Day movement was jumpstarted to bring the conversation of our environment’s care to to the forefront. Its main mission aimed at building encouragement for everyone  to “go green” and play their part in sustaining today’s planet for future generations. This initiative has also influenced the interior design arena with a growing demand for eco-friendly products. So, in spirit of Earth Day, here are some eco-friendly design inspirations that can help you contribute to the cause from the comfort of your home. 

Furniture made from reclaimed wood or metal - Invest in a piece that is made of recycled raw materials. Many boutique furniture makers that specialize in salvaging materials also tend to source locally, which reduces their carbon footprint. This eco-friendly design tip can withstand the test of time and your evolving style.

Bulbs and fixtures and power - Oh my! - CFL and LED bulbs use only a fraction of the energy as incandescents and have a significantly longer lifespan. Also, dimmers offer ambiance and thus a reduction in energy consumption and utility bill savings (that’s a win-win-win)! Lets not forget, fixtures help to complete a design inspiration or vision. The materials from which they are made can present an opportunity to be eco-friendly, too; recycled or reusable pieces such as glass or metals and natural elements such as wood or cloth.

Opt for certified organic and sustainable textiles - Looking to revive your bedding, bath linens or upholstered pieces? Consider organic, sustainably grown cotton for example. This eco-friendly material ensures that from start to finish it was grown, harvested and manufactured in the least harmful process possible.
