Aspirational Chat with April Force Pardoe
This month’s Aspirational Chat takes a twist — with me in the hot seat! Is it strange to write about myself? Yes! I’ve been so honored to interview some amazing women this year since beginning our new Aspirational Chats blog series. Our guests' answers and homes have inspired me to share a bit of my own story with you. After all, if I’m asking others to let me into their lives and homes, I should be willing to let you into mine, too.
One thing I’ve seen through my design work and Chats is that what really brings us joy in our homes aren’t the great sofas or gorgeous kitchens, but the way we enjoy those pieces and spaces with the people we care about. The items support the lifestyles and aspirations of the homeowners. With this in mind, I share my Chat with you!
How long have you lived in your current home? We’ve lived in this house for 12 years! I can’t believe it’s been that long. We lived in a great Butchers Hill row house prior to moving to our Howard County suburban life.
How does this home reflect who you are? We are a really casual family. We really live in our home. It’s not large, which means we use every room and each room is set up to be comfortable and reflect us with furniture selections, colors and keepsakes.
Favorite room in the house? It’s a toss up between our living room and family room. Our living room is open to the kitchen and has lots of natural light and the family room is cozy and colorful, a great space to spend a Sunday in the winter. Both rooms have wood burning fireplaces, which I love. Tough to pick!
What is your favorite/most comfortable chair in your home? We have a pair of vintage, mid-century swivel, rocker chairs that I found at Habitat for Humanity’s Restore when I helped them with a volunteer event. They were in great shape and I had them reupholstered in a bold, durable fabric. I drink a lot of coffee in these chairs!
Favorite travel find in house - We like to pick up small art pieces when we are on vacation so one of those would top my list. I love a photo of a sunset over the water that we picked up in Rock Hall, MD and a painting of a New England water scene that we bought at small art show in Cape Cod, MA.
Describe your aspirational life
My life is all about moving parts, keeping things easy and being comfortable. From creating a home that welcomes friends and family, to having rooms that allow us to relax as a family, I’m careful to make sure our home can be lived in. Please put your feet up on the coffee table, curl up with a pillow and place a drink on a nearby table. It’s important to me that we showcase treasures in our home that reflect us and tell our story. I have a wall with my daughter’s art on display. I aspire for a personal space where we can live comfortably.
My business is somewhat similar! Lots of moving parts, systems to keep tasks easy. I always want our clients to be comfortable with our process. I aspire for clear & consistent communication, creative designs and timely deliverables.
How do you spend your free time? A lot of my free time is spent with my family at my daughters’ activities and events. My girls are 11 & 14 and between their sports, hobbies and friends, there’s a lot of shuttling to and from events and watching and enjoying their activities. When I’m not spending time with family, I enjoy reading my book club books, watching Netflix (my guilty pleasure) and spending time with friends.
What non-profit organizations do you support? I am on the advisory board of the Women’s Giving Circle of Howard County and through the business we’ve been working to support Operation Homefront’s Transitional Housing program. There are so many worthy causes — if only I had more time!
Favorite vacation spot - We have a fondness for Cape Cod. Everything is lighter and brighter there and the vibe is very relaxed. Oh, and there are a lot of beaches!
Coffee or tea - coffee
Cats or dogs - dogs
Morning or night person - night
Cake or Pie - cheesecake
Netflix or movie theater - both!
Summer or Winter - winter
Chocolate or vanilla ice cream - vanilla
Online shopping or shopping in store - Depends on what I’m shopping for - clothing is always better in person, otherwise Amazon is my friend!
Favorite holiday - Christmas
Favorite food - Indian
If you could live in a different state or country, where would it be? - Probably somewhere in New England.
I hope that you've enjoyed a look into my life, especially learning more about my aspirations as a homeowner and small business owner. For more interesting reads, I encourage you to read our other Aspirational Chat posts:
