3 Design Resolutions to Follow this New Years

We’re just a few days away from a New Year. It holds such promise of new beginnings, fresh starts and new memories. I’m getting excited just writing about it!

Are you in the “I always make New Year’s resolutions” camp or not? I have to admit that I generally do not make New Year’s resolutions, but if you do, I have a few design resolutions to add to your list!

These are resolutions that I think you should always follow when it comes to designing your home, so repeat after me:

In 2012 I resolve to…

  • Only decorate with items that are important to me and/or that I LOVE to look at.
Here’s the thing, you should not place items in your home unless you love them. Sorry Aunt Ida, the ugly vase you gave me for Christmas is not going up in my house. Don’t display things out of guilt. I will take control of my decor!
  • Not buy home decor items on impulse.
If you shop for home decor items without a goal, list or mission and only buy on impulse, chances are it will not fall into the “I love it” resolution. Have a goal when shopping. Stick to your mission. I will not make impulse buys!
  • Save for big items that I want versus buying a cheaper version just to have said item.
If you are in the market for a new sofa, for example, and have your eye on a $3,000 piece that you LOVE, save for it & wait for a sale. Do not buy a lesser-quality sofa just to have one. If you must sit on something get a second-hand filler for very little money and cover it. I will not compromise on my furnishings!

You can do this! Pick one if your resolution list is long and let me know which one you are working on. I’d love to keep track of your progress. Do you have another design resolution for 2012? Please leave a comment below, I’d love to hear it!

Happy 2012 & happy decorating!
