Kids take a lot of the blame when it comes to stains on furnishings, but an adult with a glass of red wine at book club can create some damage on your beautiful, cream-colored sofa! Wine, tasty treats and conversation are a staple to any great book club meeting (oh, and you may also talk about the book!). If you want to host your next book club with more time for chatting and less time worrying about your guests enjoying wine in your living room, we have a few ways to wine-proof your sofa for book club!
If you’re in the market to redecorate your living or family room with new furnishings, your first priority should be making sure you select a quality fabric that can stand up to your needs and the needs of your guests. If eating and drinking will take place in these spaces (by you, your book club or your grandkids) you will want to make sure you have performance fabrics covering your seating. These fabrics are the superheros of the fabric world because they look great, feel great and, most importantly, as the name implies, they perform by reducing stains on your seating.
Here’s the scoop on three types of performance fabrics, how they perform and what they can do to make your life and entertaining easier!
Crypton - Crypton fabric offers permanent, breathable protection built into every fiber, extreme stain repellency and soil release, bleach cleanable and anti-microbial technology and environmentally sustainable. The benefit is it’s easy to clean. Most liquids simply roll off of Crypton fabrics, or they can be quickly blotted off the surface with a dry towel or sponge. The spot cleaning method of stain removal can be used for most light to medium stains, such as coffee, red wine, crayon and ketchup.
Nanotex - Each fiber of Nanotex fabric is transformed to repel spills, release stains, extend the life of the fabric, retain the fabrics softness and allow the fabric to breath naturally. Nanotex performance technology causes most liquids to bead up and roll off of the surface, while tough stains like wine and ketchup wash out easily. It’s environmentally-friendly and uses no formaldehyde or volatile organic compounds. There are Nanotex fabrics available or it can be added to some fabrics (check the fabric manufacturer for options), making the fabric a better performer for heavily-used, mess-prone areas.
Sunbrella - Resistant to fading and degradation from sunlight and chemical exposure, bleach cleanable and environmentally sustainable. It’s made with acrylic and does pill, so it’s best suited for low traffic area such as a less-frequently used sun room or sitting area. The benefit to using this fabric is it will retain its color (especially in a sunny space) and most stains will clean up with mild soap. Considered by many to an outdoor fabric, Sunbrella has created many fabrics that have a softer touch, making them a nice option for indoor seating and pillows.
Like so many things in life, when you have the right tool for the job (in this case, a fabric that performs like a stain-fighting champ) it makes all the difference. With the right fabric on your sofa, your next book club meeting and glass of red wine just got a lot better! Can you imagine watching red wine spill on your Crypton fabric sofa, only to grab a cloth, blot it up and continue on with the discussion?
