Creative wall coverings

Our homes’ walls are simply oversized blank canvases, ready and waiting for whatever our decorative minds dream up. For most, the standard go-to is a new pigment of paint. And while there is nothing wrong with picking up that roller or brush, there’s a plethora of options to explore above and beyond. To help inspire your next room renovation, here are some creative wall coverings to consider!

Wallpaper

Yes, wallpaper! Don’t shy away from the thought of dated patterns or potentially peeling seams. When carefully coordinated and properly installed, this type of wall covering can be the piece de resistance of your space. Looser, larger patterns can help to elongate a space, whereas tighter, busier prints can make a room feel more intimate. Color also comes into play here. Neutral palettes and soft hues can help mute bold motifs and tone down the drama. If your aesthetic tends toward the “bolder the better,” pair a supercharged wallpaper with neutral pieces and accessories to avoid design overkill.

If starting with a blank slate, find a wallpaper that you’re drawn to and use that color palette as the foundation for the rest of your design decisions. On the other hand, if you’re looking to stray from a complete room overhaul and simply freshen up your wall covering, opt for a wallpaper that color matches your largest pieces’ pigments. You can always swap out small accessories and accents for a seamless synchronization.

 {Not for the faint of heart, this black and gold Queen Anne print is the perfect fit for lovers of all things dramatic. The metallic floral pattern helps to take the edge off of the bold ebony background. I am digging the monochromatic color palette with pops of hot pink and natural wood. From:  Rifle Paper Co. }

Unique Accents

Add some texture to your space with wood or veneer paneling, like shiplap or beadboard. Wall covering products on the market today have improved from the cliché, composite wood panels of the 1960s and 70s. Also, you’ll notice that horizontal mounting is trending these days whereas mid-century panels were most often hung in a vertical fashion. Reclaimed wood is all the rage, too; consider repurposing planks found at your local reclamation warehouse. For an uber rustic flair, find pieces with a lot of character such a knots and grain lines. If your taste tends towards shabby chic or coastal vibes, beadboard lends itself well to those styles. While it can be used in essentially any space, this type of wall covering is a perfect fit for bathrooms and kitchens due to its water resistance. Most often, beadboard comes pre-finished, ready to cut and install making this an easy project for DIYers. Don’t hesitate to pick up a paint brush and customize the color, either!

Peculiar Paints

Right up there on the list with ice cream for breakfast and playing ball in the house, our inner child would also love nothing more than to write on the walls! Lucky for us, paint professionals heard that calling and have concocted recipes, think dry erase and chalkboard paints, to turn our walls into creative canvases. These products are perfect for in-home offices and studios, playrooms, homework nooks – virtually anywhere that poses as a work space or imagination station. Shades of classroom black and meeting room white sound a bit dull to you? No sweat. Some manufacturers, like Benjamin Moore for example, now offer their complete library of colors available in a chalkboard finish. And others, such as Sherwin Williams, carry a clear coat dry erase paint to transform any wall or surface.
