Pantone Color of the Year 2018: Ultra Violet

The powers that be at Pantone, the experts of all things color, have officially announced the 2018 Color of the Year: Ultra Violet. As we near the close of the year, Ultra Violet encourages us to welcome 2018, a fresh start, with whimsical hearts and imaginative minds.

Like an indulgent spa treatment, turn to Ultra Violet as a source for rejuvenation. This bluish purple can stylishly revitalize your home’s decor with a sense of vibrancy and boldness.

Let’s talk palettes using Pantone’s Color of the Year. Purple and yellow are complementary colors, sitting opposite one another on the color wheel. Layer with shades of neutrals such as white, gray or taupe for a foolproof palette and accent with yellow metals like gold or brass.

A more organic method, use everyday items to inspire your use of Ultra Violet. For example jewel tones, watercolor paintings and bouquets of wildflowers all showcase possible color combinations.

A floor covering, window treatment or accent pillow adds a softer effect to this saturated shade. I love the visual and tactile appeal that fabrics add.

For a less adventurous approach to Ultra Violet, incorporate pops of purple in your room’s accessories. Vases, throws or small decorative objects are ideal because they help you dabble with this bold color and aren’t as daring as painting the walls, for example. A piece of professional advice: edit your selections. A few well-chosen pieces can make quite the decorative statement.

Sometimes, your selections don’t have to be quite so planned and intentional. It’s perfectly okay (and even better yet!) when you include something in your space because it speaks to you. One of the most important components of design is to have fun and make it personal.
