Family room accessories; Showcase your treasures

Your family room is the perfect place to celebrate all things you hold near and dear by displaying your keepsakes. After all it is the space where you likely spend most of your time together as a unit day-in, day-out. Style and taste aside, add a sentimental affect to this room by showcasing your treasures and mementos. Here a few tips for adding a personal touch to your family room accessories.

Shop your home

Not all home accessories need to be store-bought. If you seek to freshen up your family room without breaking the bank pay those closets, storage bins and attics a visit. Shopping your home’s nooks and crannies is a perfect starting place before grabbing your credit card. You never know what treasures you’ll uncover! Tucked away photo albums, travel souvenirs, books, trinkets and heirlooms all have great potential to pose as family room accessories. Take a stab at some do-it-yourself activities, too. DIY plays double duty as an afternoon of family fun and a finished product that you’re proud to display.

Also, play around with finding some of your already-used items a new home within your home. Pull your pieces out of their familiar places, gather them altogether and dabble with giving them a new destination. For example, create a collage of refrigerator masterpieces in your family room and swap them out as new works of art are brought home from school. Use a collection of frames that match the room’s aesthetic but fill them with homemade treasures instead of professional prints.

Mix and match

Blending the old with the new adds a pinch of personality without ditching a design plan. Use some of your favorite books with decorative spines to elevate a newer knickknacks or table lamp. A photo album can make for a great statement piece on your coffee table in place of a book; the album itself can complement your style but its the contents that count. Typography is one of my favorite design elements, too. Sayings or quotes that have meaning to your family, or accessories that boast your last initial, are an excellent way to incorporate character. Showcase a typographical print with a sentimental phrase in a new frame.

Expertly accessorized

First, when approaching your family room accessories, I encourage you to group items together rather than spread them out on every available surface. Designing vignettes of your keepsakes and collectibles allows them to tell a story, creating visual appeal and movement. Jot down this professional tip: aim for odd-numbered groupings. You can either showcase like items together for emphasis or cluster unique pieces together, but either way I suggest varying the scale, height and texture within your groupings. The key is to have pops of your personality throughout the space rather than a flood of accessories.

Let your family room accessories showcase your story. Share your travels, hobbies and interests by including items of nostalgic value alongside some of your store-bought finds. Part of the design process is putting your personality on display, and what better way to do that than painting your family room with pieces of you!
